Mitamu Sextet

Band founder Tammy Huynh is a Vietnamese-American vocalist and composer whose songs feature compelling narratives accompanied by a powerful mix of jazz, funk and experimental music. In February she raised $7,400 to fund a recording project that will use artificial intelligence as an instrument for music making. Tammy, 27, who performs as Mitamu, won the Beta Hi-Fi Emerging Artist Festival Competition last year. Raised in Doylestown, Tammy has a bachelor’s degree from Temple University and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music. She lives in New York City.

5 Fresh Takes will highlight five women who are diverse personally and musically, arriving in the region from different states and continents, and creating music ranging from straight-ahead jazz to blends of jazz/classical/folk and jazz/funk/rock.

The composers — Gosia Julia Maj, Tammy Huynh, Gina Benalcazar, Lora Sherrodd and Laura Lizcano — are accomplished musicians. Ages 25 to 33, they each perform in their bands as singers and/or instrumentalists.

All have years of experience composing and performing; four have or are obtaining master’s degrees in jazz studies. All have released recordings of their original music or are releasing one later this year.

But the challenge of carving out a career in the music world – daunting under any circumstance — is even more uphill in a niche such as jazz, and doubly so for women, who are underrepresented in the genre.
