Gosia Maj Quintet

Gosia Julia Maj is a jazz singer, composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist with a soulful voice and sophisticated style.

A native of Poland who lives in the Netherlands and U.S., the versatile 33 year old has recorded with trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Don Braden and many other jazz luminaries.

Gosia, who attended University of the Arts as an undergrad, is enrolled as a Fulbright scholar at Temple University, where she will receive a master’s in jazz studies in May.

5 Fresh Takes will highlight five women who are diverse personally and musically, arriving in the region from different states and continents, and creating music ranging from straight-ahead jazz to blends of jazz/classical/folk and jazz/funk/rock.

The composers — Gosia Julia Maj, Tammy Huynh, Gina Benalcazar, Lora Sherrodd and Laura Lizcano — are accomplished musicians. Ages 25 to 33, they each perform in their bands as singers and/or instrumentalists.

All have years of experience composing and performing; four have or are obtaining master’s degrees in jazz studies. All have released recordings of their original music or are releasing one later this year.

But the challenge of carving out a career in the music world – daunting under any circumstance — is even more uphill in a niche such as jazz, and doubly so for women, who are underrepresented in the genre.
